balancing pieces (2025) ; 4:40

by Paola Lopreiato

Conservatorio Torre Franca Vibo Valentia

We see only in parts / the flash of a tail, the beating heart / in pieces and parts / And there may be a few things you can’t recall at all / And you’re in pieces and part / Pieces and parts. (Revised text from the song “pieces and parts” by Laurie Anderson). This audiovisual work explores the relationship between memory and identity. Memory is deeply connected to identity, shaped by our interactions with people and places. Understanding oneself relies on personal experiences of people and places (and their memories). Philosophers and psychologists argue that self-awareness depends on memory, as our experiences contribute to who we are. Through images this piece allows participants to recall their own past, reinforcing the idea that memory and identity are continuously shaped by experiences. The audiovisual work alternates between the creation of large, calm spaces and moments of dynamism and vigor, reflecting the fluctuations of our inner world, where memories are kept. It balances music and images, inviting the listener to explore a profound emotional and spiritual connection.
