CAN you hear them? (2024) ; 8:00

by Daniele Valenti

Independent Artist

“CAN you hear them?” is an acousmatic composition created almost entirely from recordings of cans, transformed through advanced audio techniques. Composed using the Csound programming language in combination with time-stretching, granular synthesis, and various audio processes within a DAW, the piece explores the hidden textures, resonances, and timbral qualities found in the sounds of cans.
Although it may resemble a soundscape in the way the sounds are assembled and processed, the work focuses on the abstract nature of sound, particularly the manipulation of timbre to reveal new sonic possibilities. This fixed media composition invites listeners to discover the unexpected beauty embedded in ordinary materials. The word “CAN” appears in uppercase in the title to emphasize its dual meaning in English, functioning both as a noun and a verb. The title challenges the listener to identify the precise moments when the original source (cans) becomes clearly recognizable.

Daniele Valenti

Daniele Valenti was born in Palermo (1996), and graduated in 2024, in Electronic Music (Master’s degree) at the Alessandro Scarlatti conservatory of Palermo. As a student of this Conservatory, he has had the opportunity to attend different Masterclasses and Workshops with some important composers such as Oscar Strasnoy, Alessandro Cipriani and Barry Truax. He composed a Live Electronics piece as a result of the Masterclass with Strasnoy, and was played at “NOZ – Nuove Officine Zisa”, in Palermo. Throughout his study course he played with different musical groups, and he also composed various pieces for several theatrical performances, in Palermo, Bologna and Venice. “Anlassen” is a composition that he wrote entirely with the audio programming language “Csound”. This piece was particularly appreciated by Cipriani and was also selected for the 9th edition of the NNOI Festival in Zernikow, Germany. His latest Live Electronics composition “Quel Giorno” explores the interactions between a tenor saxophone and real-time electronics (with Max/MSP). In January 2025 he attended a Screen Scoring intensive program course in Siena. He is currently focusing on sound design and electronic music for film.
