by Enrico Dorigatti
University of Portsmouth, School of Film, Media, and Creative Technologies
Runes is an electroacoustic music piece inviting the listeners to immerse in fantasy worlds where the boundaries between the real and the magical blur. Inspired by Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, through a tapestry of soundscapes and sonic textures, the composition invites the listener to put aside their disbelief and embrace the enchanted, transported to mystical and arcane worlds where magical becomes real—an ethereal dimension beyond our perception. In doing so, primitive, crude, and impactful sonorities are employed in contrast to smooth and delicate textures, representing the dichotomy between good and evil, which is incidentally a relevant and ever-explored theme in the fantasy genre. Beyond the direct representativeness of the piece, Runes wants to be a testament to the creative potential of sound and its ability to transport us to realms beyond our imagination.
