3D Illusory Immersive Soundscape: Lava’s Roaring Dance (2024) ; 10:16

by Zoe (Yi-Cheng) Lin

National Taiwan Normal University

Lava’s Roaring Dance is a companion piece to last year’s Glacier, both composed for fixed media (stereo or Ambisonic). While Glacier reflected on humanity’s destruction of nature and nature’s forgiveness, Lava’s Roaring Dance depicts volcanic eruptions—seemingly destructive, yet vital to creation and life. Beneath the chaos lies nature’s passion for renewal. Together, the two works contrast human-induced destruction with nature’s regenerative power, urging a deeper sense of responsibility toward the Earth. Technically, the piece explores sound synthesis to portray matter’s three states—from molten magma and gas, to icy cave walls, to the eerie calm of a frozen lake—culminating in the surreal textures of semi-solid magma cooled by seawater. For full immersion, a high playback volume is recommended. These twin compositions embody yin and yang, merging sonic sculpture with inner artistic vision. They invite reflection on the fragile balance between destruction, creation, and our bond with nature.
