Restless (2023) ; 9:40
by Seongah Shin
Keimyung University
“Restless” is a work from the Thin Black Line Project, currently in progress as part of the Jeju Series. Jeju Island, situated in the southern sea of Korea, is the nation’s largest island and is renowned as its most emblematic volcanic landscape. Isolated from the mainland, Jeju has developed a unique cultural identity, including its own dialect and traditions, along with a deeply layered history marked by both ancient heritage and periods of foreign incursion. This piece contemplates the dynamic interplay between human existence and the rhythms of nature, drawing inspiration from the island’s striking natural beauty and its enduring—often turbulent—historical narrative. All sonic materials in Restless originate from Jeju’s natural environment. These include elemental sounds such as wind and ocean waves, as well as ritualistic audio associated with local shamanistic practices. The work further investigates how these sonic elements interact with unconscious auditory imagination, generating new layers of acoustic interpretation and meaning.
